I am a mother of two amazing daughters that are complete opposites in their likes, dislikes, the way they learned and even the way I had to correct their behavior. It is important to realize what worked for one may not work for another. It is our job as parents and teachers to foster their individual needs and help them discover their own special talents!

 

I am a retired teacher of early childhood for 15 years, an author and artist.
I discovered my gift and passion for teaching through my own children. Growing up with a brother and sister that made straight A’s with little or no effort was discouraging for me. My parents had the SAME expectations for all of us; unfortunately making straight A’s didn’t come as easily for me. I spent more time doing homework and studying than my siblings.  I resolved not to put that pressure on my own children and recognize their individuality that allows them to flourish and discover their own unique talents. My hope was to instill in them the love for learning! Teaching has evolved over the years. Unfortunately, not all schools, curriculum and teachers are created equally.  You need to do your research. I am a preschool advocate; I believe those early years are the most important and provides a solid foundation for the years ahead. Children are never too young to learn new concepts, socialization and emotional coping skills. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition!

A good Preschool instills these skills by teaching children how to share, wait their turn, follow directions, become a good listener, using fine motor skills through activities, foster gross motor skills through physical activity, consequences for unbecoming behavior, how to make friends and most important how to be a good friend. I made sure to incorporate these values and methods into my class to meet the needs of all my students. My talent as a teacher was recognizing when something planned was not exciting my students. I was able to change it up by creating another way to teach the subject matter through play, so they didn’t even realize they were learning!
